Term Definition
Evolutionary Spinal Maintenance

Grounded in an open, stable stance that specifically isolates all motion to the spine, the upper body is gracefully gyrated through a fluid sequence of pivotal movements. This art of rhythmic spinal tuning systematically exercises the intervertebral disks to avoid disk degeneration by maintaining their inherent strength, pliability and absorbency. EDGU balances the left and right hemispheres of the body/brain, releases mal-aligned vertebrae, and liberates compensation patterns held in the body. EDGU creates a “wholly” experience, blending body movement with spiritual invocation.

Five Element Acupuncture

Five element style acupuncture is a form based on classical Chinese acupuncture as expounded in the Nan Jing, a text from the late Han dynasty in about 200 bce. There is a particular style of using 5 element theory that was developed in Europe by J.R. Worsely in the latter half of the 20th century which is a product of syncretism, incorporating elements of Chinese and Japanese methods and with some homeopathic influence (Worsely 5 Element Acupuncture). While many forms of this medicine are holistic and therefore address all levels of imbalance, one could say that the specialty of this style is its ability to address chronic disease; complicated multi-layered situations; and its ability to address the more subtle issues such as emotional and psycho- spiritual imbalance.

Foot Reflexology

A holistic therapy using thumb pressure on points on the feet which correspond to all parts of the body. Applying pressure to these points helps facilitate the body’s return to balance and health.

Homeopathy

A therapeutic system of medicine that is based on the principle of similars--like cures like--which means that a substance that can cause certain symptoms in a healthy person can cure similar symptoms in an unhealthy person. Homeopathy aims to aid and stimulate the body's own defense and immune processes.

Hot Stone Massage

Smooth stones and oil are heated and applied to the body with light pressure. The heat warms and relaxes muscle tissues.

Injury Treatment Massage

Detailed, focused work on specific areas of the body. Massage therapy is an appropriate form of treatment for many soft tissue injuries and traumas and has been found to be very effective in reducing neck and back pain stemming from automobile accidents and work accidents.

Intraoral Massage

Intraoral Massage relieves the symptoms of TMJ and other temporomandibular joint problems.

Japanese Acupuncture

A school of Japanese acupuncture which is distinguished by its emphasis on the classics, its utilization of the five-phase points in treating the root of disease, and the importance which it attaches to palpatory skills in diagnosis and point location.

Kung Fu

Kung Fu translates literally as 'work effort' and can be understood as putting in a sustained effort at something over a period of time. When we put in time to practice and cultivate any craft, this is kung fu. It is also a diverse system of martial arts that focus on conditioning the body to prolong life in the face of adversity. Its roots are in self defense, but its benefits extend into building vitality and strength to live a healthy life and withstand disease, keeping the body in good form to prevent debilitating diseases that may afflict us in our older age if we adhere to an unhealthy lifestyle, and building focus and discipline that we can bring into any aspect of our life.

Lomi-Lomi

Ancient healing art form of massage practiced by the Kahunas of Hawaii. Lomi-lomi has a rhythm and flow that is soothing and feels complete.

Manaka Yin Yang Channel Balancing

Primarily utilizes ion pumping cords on the Extraordinary Vessel System and which excels at structural balancing.

Manual Ligament Therapy

Manual Ligament Therapy™ is a brand new, cutting-edge therapy with a patent-pending. MLT™ uses the sensory qualities of ligaments to relieve hypertonic muscles and rebalance joint space. The end result is proper structural alignment of the body with very little effort on the clinician's part.

Research studies at International Universities have revealed that ligaments are a significant source of acute, sub-acute, and chronic muscle pain and dysfunction. MLT™ is the only known technique that recognizes this fact while other therapies normally just address the muscles and tendons. With this advantage, MLT™ is able to resolve both simple and difficult injuries and pathologies quickly, and with little or no discomfort to the recipient.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage

Is a specialized massage therapy in which the practitioner works on the skin with gentle circular, pumping or spiral movements. It stimulates the lymphatic system, which transports fluids that are vital to the defense of the body and eliminates toxins.

Maya Abdominal Therapy

The Arvigo Techniques of Maya Abdominal Therapy are founded on the ancient Mayan technique of abdominal massage which is an external non invasive manipulation that repositions internal organs that have shifted, thereby restricting the flow of blood, lymph, nerve and chi.

Based on over thirty years of training and experience in massage, naprapathy, herbology, and spiritual healing, Dr. Rosita Arvigo developed these techniques which now bear her name. This modality incorporates a holistic approach to health care which includes massage, anatomy and physiology, herbology, nutrition, and emotional and spiritual healing. Dr. Arvigo believes that with any natural healing technique, these areas must be simultaneously addressed to promote optimal health.

Dr. Arvigo learned these techniques from her mentor, Don Elijio Panti, the great Maya Shaman of Belize, Central America with whom she apprenticed for ten years. Don Elijio believed that a woman's center is her uterus. "If a woman's uterus is out of balance, so is she," he would say. Midwives and healers of Central America agree that most female troubles are caused by the wandering womb. Don Elijio passed away in 1996 at the age of 103. Rosita also studied with Hortence Robinson, a 73 year old herbal midwife of Belize who has been delivering babies since she was 13.

The Arvigo Techniques of Maya Abdominal Massage™ address position and health of the pelvic and abdominal organs. The work is best known for the correction of the prolapsed, fallen, or tilted uterus and for the prevention and treatment of benign prostate enlargement in men, and for relief of many common digestive disorders.

Benefits for Women

Normally the uterus leans slightly over the bladder in the center of the pelvis, about one and a half inches above the pubic bone. It is held in this position by muscles, the vaginal wall and ligaments that attach it to the back, front, and sides of the pelvis. Uterine ligaments are made to stretch to accommodate a growing fetus inside and to move freely when the bladder or bowel is full. The ligaments and muscles can weaken and loosen, causing the uterus to fall downward, forward, backward or to either side.

A uterus in any of these positions is called tilted or prolapsed. Modern medicine has little or nothing to offer women with this problem. Options may include using the birth control pill, muscle relaxants, or surgery and women are generally told, "your uterus is tipped, but that is normal and don't worry about it." Yet women have a laundry list of physical and emotional symptoms that can be addressed and prevented with these simple, noninvasive massage techniques. When reproductive organs shift, they can constrict normal flow of blood and lymph, and disrupt nerve connections. Just a few extra ounces sitting on blood and lymph vessels can cause havoc throughout the different systems in the body. By shifting the uterus back into place, homeostasis, or the natural balance of the body, is restored in the pelvic area and the surrounding organs. Toxins are flushed and nutrients that help to tone tissue and balance hormones are restored to normal order. This is essential for healthy pregnancy, labor, and delivery.

Old adhesions from invasive treatments to the pelvic and abdominal area, including fibroid tumors, endometriosis, and cesarean delivery are diminished when addressed by uterine massage. In addition, digestion, urinary and bladder problems can be helped.

Benefits for Men

Men benefit greatly from Maya Abdominal Massage techniques as well. By ensuring a full blood supply to the prostate, the abdominal massage helps to prevent swelling and inflammation. Men report that they can feel a distinct difference in blood flow after a treatment. Not only does the massage relieve prostate swelling, but it helps alleviate varicose veins, premature ejaculation, some impotency problems and the need to urinate frequently. Digestive and Emotional Benefits for Men and Women

Individuals with digestive disorders benefit greatly from Maya Abdominal Massage. Many of our common disorders such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Indigestion, Constipation, and heartburn are treated with antacids, muscle relaxants, and a variety of other medications. These treatments address symptoms, not the causes. By using the techniques of Maya Abdominal Massage, the upper abdomen is also given a deep, thorough massage to loosen the tight muscles around the stomach and the arteries that feed the digestive and eliminative organs with their vital blood supply. The diaphragm is gently massaged allowing relaxation of tight musculature.

Muscle Energy Technique

Manual therapy which involves movement of the spinal segments and the pelvis. It is a gentle, non-invasive technique which uses light isometric contractions of specific muscles to affect changes in alignment. These changes will result in an increase in joint mobility which will help to alleviate pain and allow for more freedom of movement.
